Thomas Signed By A's

Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane and a bargain know each other very well; after all, he wrote the definitive book on the economic side of the game in his book, "Moneyball". Well you can add another bargain to his collection: Frank Thomas. According to the Associated Press, Thomas agreed to terms with the A's Thursday after being released by the Toronto Blue Jays. The deal, in and of itself, was put together seamlessly as it came together Wednesday just hours after Thomas cleared waivers. Everything was finalized Wednesday evening and Thomas had perhaps an hour to catch a flight to Oakland.
Oakland's share of Thomas' salary for this season is minuscule - $337,000 - compared to what Toronto will pay Thomas; the Blue Jays owe the remaining balance of the $8 million due to Thomas. As you can well imagine, Oakland did some tinkering with their lineup to make room for Thomas; they placed Travis Buck on the 15-day disabled list with shin splints, retroactive to April 19; they also moved third baseman Eric Chavez to the 60-day disabled list. With Thomas officially in the fold, the A's will probably for right now move Jack Cust to left field while Mike Sweeney will probably get more time at first base, along with rookie Daric Barton.

Some quick fact-checking would tell you that Michael Lewis wrote the book "Moneyball" about Billy Beane and the Oakland A's. Beane did not write the book.
