Detroit Drills Seattle 12-8

Edgar Renteria went 4-for-4 with five RBI as the Tigers mashed the Mariners 12-8 in the opener of a three-game set at Comerica Park. Renteria also scored twice and finished just a double short of the cycle. Curtis Granderson homered and drove in three, and Carlos Guillen and Magglio Ordonez each belted solo homers for Detroit, which built an 11-1 lead in the sixth inning and hung on to win for only the second time in eight games. Justin Verlander fanned seven over six innings of four-hit, one-run ball to improve to 2-and-7. Adrian Beltre went deep, knocked in three and scored twice for Seattle, which had won its previous two games. Carlos Silva was lit up for seven runs in four innings to fall to 3-and-3 with the loss.
