Wellemyer, Cards Pick Off Pirates

Todd Wellemeyer allowed just two hits and a run over seven solid innings to pitch the Cardinals to a 5-1 win over the Pirates at Busch Stadium. The right-hander walked three and struck out five to improve to 4-and-1 with the win. Troy Glaus and Cesar Izturis each had three hits and an RBI for St. Louis, which won for just the second time in its last eight games. Albert Pujols went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Redbirds, who remain a game behind the Cubs in the NL Central. Paul Maholm allowed 11 hits and four runs in six innings to take the loss. Nate McLouth singled in the Pirates only run in the eighth innings. Pittsburgh was outhit 15-to-4.
