Rays Edge Red Sox To Extend Division Lead

Gabe Gross hit a two-run homer to back six-and-a-third innings of two-run ball by James Shields as the Rays squeaked by the Red Sox 5-4 at Tropicana Field. B.J Upton added a solo shot, and Carlos Pena and Jonny Gomes plated runs, as Tampa Bay won for the sixth time in seven games. Rays closer Troy Percival recorded two outs in the ninth before leaving with an apparent leg injury. J.P Howell came in to get the final out and notch his second save. Justin Masterson gave up four runs in six innings to take the loss for Boston. J.D Drew hit a solo-homer, and Mike Lowell, Brandon Moss and Jason Varitek had an RBI in defeat. The win moved the Rays a game-and-a-half ahead of the Red Sox for first place in the AL East.
