Penny, 3 Relievers Pitch Dodgers' Shutout; Blank Giants 5-0

Reported By Stephen Rhodes

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Joe Torre had a near-sleepless night prior to their home opener against the San Francisco Giants Monday; he had nothing to fear at all as Brad Penny (1-0) and 3 relievers pitched 9 shutout innings, blanking the Giants 5-0 in front of 56,000 at Dodger Stadium. Second baseman Jeff Kent went 2-of-4 with a home run, a run scored and 2 runs batted in while James Loney went 2-of-4 with a stolen base.

San Francisco pitcher Barry Zito (0-1) went 5 innings, allowing 8 hits while allowing 4 earned runs; Aaron Rowand had 2 hits for the Giants. Los Angeles (1-0) plays again on Tuesday night against San Francisco as Derek Lowe will start for the Dodgers while Matt Cain will take the mound for San Francisco.
