Yankees Rookie Starter Kennedy Tops D-Rays 9-6
The New York Yankees trotted out another rookie starter to make his MLB debut against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and Ian Kennedy was up to the task. Kennedy flew through the Yankees minor league system this year starting out at A ball in Tampa and going 12-3 at three levels. Kennedy dominated the D-Rays going 7 frames scattering five hits and giving up three runs but only one earned. The Yankees held on for a 9-6 win. Kennedy joins a string of successful rookie pitchers that have been instrumental in putting the Yankees back in the American League pennant race. Kennedy replaced Mike Mussina for the start, who had tough outings in his last three appearances. New York rookie pitchers Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain have turned into overnight heroes in the Bronx. The win evened the series at a game a piece after Tampa took game one Friday night.
