Myers Helps His Own Cause Phillies Win 8-5; Lead Dodgers In Series 2-0
Philadelphia Phillies starter Brett Myers became the first pitcher in NLCS history to get 3 hits in a game, and he pitched just well enough to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-5 Friday night. The victory gives the Phillies a 2-0 lead in the NLCS, which will be shifting to the West Coast for game three. Myers also drove in three runs, teammate Shane Victorino had 4 RBI in the win, as Philadelphia scored four runs in the bottom of the second, and an additional four in the bottom of the third.
For the second consecutive game the Dodgers scored the first run of the contest. Los Angles right fielder Andre Ethier scored in the second as Blake DeWitt grounded out. But the Phillies knocked around Dodgers starter Chad Billingsley in the bottom of the frame. After striking out the first two batters of the inning, third baseman Gregg Dobbs hit a squibber up the middle for a single. He scored as Carlos Ruiz drove him home with a double tying the game. Myers came up next, and drove home Ruiz as Philadelphia went ahead 2-1. Jimmy Rollins kept the inning alive hitting a single into center, which L.A. center fielder Matt Kemp bobbled allowing Myers to get to third, Rollins went to second on the throw home. Victorino hit a single into left center to make it a 4-1 game.
James Loney had a RBI single in the top of the third for the Dodgers to cut the lead to 4-2. But Myers would again help himself offensively in the bottom the inning when he came to the plate with the bags juiced, and drove home two runs with a single to right. Victorino had two more RBI when he hit a triple, making it an 8-2 game. The always dangerous Manny Ramirez hit a three run homer off of Myers in the bottom of the fourth as the Dodgers pulled within striking distance at 8-5. But pitching took over on both sides, and Philadelphia held on for the win.
Los Angeles will look to get their first win in the series on Sunday in front of their home crowd. The veteran Jamie Moyer will toe the rubber for the Phillies, as the Dodgers will counter with Hiroki Kuroda.
