Dice-K Shuts Down Rays; Bo-Sox Take Game One 2-0
Boston Red Sox starter Daisuke Matsuzaka threw a no hitter for six frames, and held American League East Division winners the Tampa Bay Rays scoreless. The Boston bullpen followed the lead of the man known as "Dice-K" and the Red Sox defeated the Rays in Tampa Bay in the first game of the ALCS by a score of 2-0. Matsuzaka struck out nine, and walked four batters three in the first inning.
Things looked very shaky for Boston in the bottom of the first. Matsuzaka walked lead off batter Akinori Iwamura and would end up walking the bases loaded with two out before getting out of the inning unscathed. He settled down in the second and did not allow a hit until Carl Crawford led off the seventh with a single. Cliff Floyd was up next and also singled, the fleet Crawford getting to third on the play. But he would remain stranded their as Dioner Navarro popped up into very shallow left field for the first out. Gabe Gross struck out for the second out of the frame, and Jason Bartlett made the third out on a grounder forcing Floyd at second.
The Red Sox had a tough time against Tampa Bay starter James Shields, but finally broke through in the fifth. Jed Lowrie drove home the game's first run as he hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Jason Bay to make it 1-0 Boston. The Red Sox scored an insurance run in the eighth as Kevin Youkilis had a RBI double, and drove home Dustin Pedroia.
The two teams will met again Saturday at Tropicana Field. Josh Beckett will be on the bump for Boston, Scott Kazmir gets the start for Tampa Bay.
