Lofton Loving Life Tribe Spanks Yanks 12-3
If you think about the life span of an athlete's career, it's really rather bizarre. Where else in the USA work force would you be considered a "grizzled veteran" nearing retirement in your late to mid thirties but in Professional Sports? A lawyer, an engineer, a computer programmer, would all just be starting to hit their stride, athletes are planning for that pension.
It personally hits home when you have covered an athlete on both sides of that spectrum! I remember like it was yesterday fresh faced Kenny Lofton in 1995, my first year covering the Cleveland Indians who idolized veteran Eddie Murray who was brought into the team for veteran leadership. Now it has gone full circle and Lofton is Eddie Murray, a veteran the Indians brought in mid-season for his veteran experience and leadership.
Lofton fulfilled that role on Thursday night as Cleveland is back in the Playoffs for the first time since Kenny's final year with Cleveland in 2001. Facing Chien Ming-Wang and the New York Yankees in the A.L.D.S. Lofton went 3-4 with 4 RBI as the Indians beat up on the Boys From The Bronx 12-3. Cleveland Ace C.C. Sabathia battled as he went five allowing three runs on four hits. Indians first baseman Ryan Garko also went 3-4 and the Tribe got home runs from Garko, Astrubal Cabrera, Victor Martinez, and The Pronk DH Travis Hafner. Cleveland takes a 1-0 lead in the best of five series.
