Phillies Mount Amazing Comeback Tied With Mets In East
Baseball fans of a certain age (mine coincidentally!) talk about three huge collapses during pennant races that all took place in a 15 year span. Working backwards chronologically, they are the 1978 Boston Red Sox who saw a 14 game lead evaporate, and lost a one game playoff to eventual World Series winners the New York Yankees. The second team is the 1969 Chicago Cubs who had what looked like an insurmountable lead only to lose to the "Amazin' Mets." And the third team and actually the first of the three is the 1964 Philadelphia Phillies who under the late Gene Mauch lost a big lead in about a week to the ST.Louis Cardinals. Well coincidentally, two of those teams, one former winner, and one former loser are now embroiled in another amazing comeback, or devastating meltdown dependant on whom you are rooting for. The Philadelphia Phillies who trailed the New York Mets on September 12, were tied with them by the end of September 27, after they beat the Atlanta Braves Thursday 6-4. At the same time the Mets lost to the ST. Louis Cardinals 3-0. Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell each went deep for Philadelphia. Each team has three games left, the Phillies play host to Washington while Florida goes to Shea Stadium to play the Mets. Philadelphia has won 11-14 games.
